Ross left her staring after him. The two biggest purveyors of idle chatter stood outside the storage chamber with the most self-satisfied expressions on their faces. Gavina and Gillean perfected the spreading of gossip when they wished to, using bits of knowledge or rumours to build up their own positions. But they’d both protected Ilysa since she’d arrived from prying eyes and malicious tongues. That did not mean they would not babble about this between themselves though.

From those faces, they could not wait to do just that.

‘The Lady will join me at table,’ he said to them. ‘Make certain all is prepared as she needs it to be.’

He knew she’d been eating her supper in the kitchen with the servants. Gavina and Gillean were not his only sources about his wife’s activities, even if they thought so. And, until now, until he’d been made to see how big a part she’d played in preparing for the dangers they faced and would face again, he’d been content to keep her as a separate part of his life. To allow her to hide herself and her actions from him and the rest who lived here and depended on the chieftain for their livelihoods and protection. To accept the comforts she offered as she carried out her part of their vows without having to give much in return.

He’d thought he could succeed in spite of marrying The MacDonnell’s daughter, in spite of being fooled into marrying the one foisted on him in his ignorance. But, with each detail he learned from Dougal, Munro and Gillean about her—her skills, her talents and her willingness to work hard before the attack and before his injury—he understood he could not and would not ignore her value.

As an ally. As a fighter. As a cunning strategist. And now he wanted more than all those things from her.

This night he would begin his campaign to win her trust so that she did not fear him.

‘See to your Lady.’

He nodded and left, seeking Munro and a good fight. As the benevolent chieftain he was, he ignored the laughter behind him.
